St. Bernard Prison Release Paths
St. Bernard Parish Prison is the parish jail operated by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. A local detainee can leave after bond, recognizance, dismissal, time served, or completion of a parish sentence. Another person can leave the Paris Road building while custody continues under Louisiana DPS&C, another parish, the United States Marshals Service, or ICE. The same physical exit can therefore represent two very different events.
The strongest local record is the existing release sheet, custody history, or movement log. Ask for the actual out date and time, the recorded movement type, and the destination or receiving agency. A court minute may show the order that allowed release, but it may not show when processing ended. Likewise, a prison movement record may show a transfer after the local case changed. Match both records before describing the result.

Confirm St. Bernard Prison Release
No verified SBSO twenty-four-hour or seventy-two-hour released-person feed was found. The parish LAVNS roster is mainly a current-custody source. Absence from it does not prove release. For an immediate question, Corrections can distinguish present custody from the last movement category, though staff may limit detail by telephone.
- Search the parish and Louisiana LAVNS channels with the exact name and any known ID. Save the status wording and update time.
- Call SBSO Corrections at 504-278-7645. Ask whether the person is present and, if not, whether the last event was community release or transfer.
- Request the existing release or movement record from Criminal Records at 504-278-7726. Include the booking date and number if known.
- Check the St. Bernard Clerk's criminal minute for the bond order, dismissal, sentence, or other legal basis.
- If the destination names DPS&C, USMS/BOP, ICE, or another parish, confirm the receiving record in that system.

Use the first for an immediate custody question and identify the source when noting either response. The record request goes to SBSO Criminal Records rather than parish government.

A narrow request should identify the full name, date of birth, booking number if known, and a short date range. Ask for the existing booking record, release sheet, custody movement history, or equivalent record. Specify the fields sought: actual out date and time, movement type, destination, and receiving agency. Request a cost estimate and an electronic copy. SBSO lists administrative records hours Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday until 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.
Louisiana Code of Criminal Procedure article 228 supports public inspection of the booking book and booking summaries. It does not promise that every desired release field exists in one form. Ask the custodian which existing record holds the event instead of demanding a new report.
Current St. Bernard Parish Prison
The DPS&C St. Bernard directory entry identifies this as the current local prison and lists its Paris Road address. The statewide facility directory classifies the entry as a local jail or office, not a state prison. SBSO operates the building, but people held there can include local pretrial detainees, parish-sentenced people, and Louisiana state offenders housed through the parish system.

St. Bernard Prison Custody Mix
A dated legislative report gives crucial local context. In April 2021, the report described the “St. Bernard Parish Prison and Annex” with stated capacity of 250 and a reported population of 194. Of that snapshot, 157 were state offenders and 37 were parish or pretrial people. Those figures are not a current count.
The snapshot explains why a transfer check matters in St. Bernard Parish. State legal custody can continue even when a person leaves this building. Men ordinarily process through the Adult Reception and Diagnostic Center at Elayn Hunt, while women ordinarily process through the Louisiana Correctional Center for Women, according to the DPS&C placement explanation. The assigned site can then change within the state network.
For a state-sentenced person, search LAVNS and call the DPS&C telephone locator at 225-383-4580 with a DPS&C number or name and date of birth. A community-supervision result can confirm release from secure custody, but it does not mean full discharge.
St. Bernard Federal Transfer Check
An archived Justice Department table once listed 50 federal prisoners at “BERNARD PARISH PRIS.” That is historical evidence only. No current federal agreement was verified, so it cannot establish that federal prisoners are housed here now. In a known federal case, however, a recorded USMS destination should lead to the federal docket and the proper federal custody channel.
A sentenced federal person may later appear in the BOP Inmate Locator. A federal pretrial detainee can remain under USMS control without a current BOP placement. “Not in BOP custody” is also broader than community release. It can reflect another authority or later supervision, so read the locator result with the federal case record.
An ICE detainer can request notice and up to forty-eight additional hours so DHS may assume custody. No present St. Bernard ICE contract was verified. If the movement record names ICE, describe it as release from parish custody into ICE custody, then use ODLS or the official ICE information line. A missing ODLS result does not establish release or removal.
Note: Historical federal housing and a current federal transfer are different facts, and only the named receiving authority can confirm the latter.
Read St. Bernard Release Records
Release terms need careful reading. “Bond” does not mean acquittal. “Time served” can reflect a sentence, credit, or negotiated disposition. “Sentence complete” may describe the custodial part while probation or another term remains. “Parole” and good-time release usually indicate community supervision. “Transfer” means custody continued.

When dates conflict, keep each event separate: court order time, St. Bernard out time, receiving intake time, and LAVNS update time. A clean timeline is more accurate than forcing one date to answer every question.
SBSO does not publish a retention promise for an online release archive. LAVNS update timing is also not a retention rule. A vanished online entry must not be described as deleted or expunged without authoritative proof.

A records response should be tested against identity and scope. Confirm the full legal name, suffix, date of birth, booking number, and date range. If SBSO finds no responsive record, ask whether another custodian or legacy system holds the entry. A narrow no-record response does not prove the person was never booked or never released. Preserve the written response, its date, and the search terms used. If the record is redacted, ask for the statutory basis and any segregable public portion rather than treating the missing field as proof of a particular outcome.
